Coastal Odyssey
After 48 unwanted hours at anchor in Rosslare Bay, the winds finally eased enough to allow Coastal Odyssey to start moving north along the east coast of Ireland. With winds still blowing from the northwest and west, progress has been challenging for the team. They have had to hug the coastline tightly so the wind blows over the top of them. Adding extra miles is not ideal, but currently, it’s the only way they can make progress against these unseasonal and unwelcome north/northwesterly winds.
Passing by Dublin Bay presented a real challenge as they had to cut across open water, exposing themselves to the full force of the wind. After being unable to round the Howth headland, the team made for Red Rock anchorage to wait for improved conditions. Six hours later, with a drop in the wind and a favourable tide, they were able to round the headland and push up the coast. We hope they will be able to cross Dundalk Bay and reach Carlingford Lough later today, provided the weather cooperates (which it probably won't!).
Northern Ireland, keep an eye out for them - they’ll be with you soon.
Sea Change
The continuing unseasonal weather has been hampering team Sea Change’s progress. Currently sheltering in Padstow Harbour, they need the northerly and westerly winds to ease long enough to allow them to cross the Bristol Channel to Milford Haven. They require a favourable weather window of 36 hours to achieve this, which hasn’t been forthcoming during the last five days.
Clearly, this is immensely frustrating for the team, but their mission is to tell the story of our ocean and those who are working to protect, restore and regenerate it, so they've been keeping themselves busy with podcasts, media interviews, and a visit to the National Lobster Hatchery.
Track both teams on the YB Tracking app to see how they’re getting on.
