About GB Row Challenge

How much would you pay NOT to row for 2110 miles, non-stop stop for 5 weeks, around the clock, through wind, rain, storms.... and possibly a little bit of sun? How much?....

This is a non-stop row circumnavigation of Great Britain (GB) that will be conducted for the first time ever, by a 4 man crew, organised and led by the Grenadier Guards. This team will row continuously 24 hours a day for nearly 2 months.

The total distance is 2110 miles, although in reality it will be greater, completed between 21 May and 21 July 2005 dependent upon the weather conditions.

The aims of the expedition are as follows:

Raise money for and the profile of two very worthwhile charities: The Outward Bound Trust (OB) and Leukaemia Research.

Set a New World Record, for circumnavigating Great Britain in a rowing boat.

Adventurous training and to complete a personal challenge in extremely adverse conditions.  To achieve the aim by successfully managing and overcoming real and perceived dangers, whilst learning new individual and team skills.

A Sea of Inspiration
GB ROW Challenge - Press Release

The world record attempt will be launched by the Guinness Book of World Records, from Tower Bridge, London on the 7th June between 1.30-2pm.

In support of The Outward Bound Trust, and Leukaemia Research. Three Grenadier Guards and one newly indoctrinated Outward Bound Instructor will begin the challenge of a lifetime. They will attempt to row 2110 miles non-stop around the entire coast of Great Britain to set a new world record.

You can probably imagine it; wanting to stop, but determined to carry on; hurting, and knowing that there is worse to come; disorientated, exhausted, but fired on by the support of family and friends. All this is commonplace for leukaemia sufferers. The team hope to raise awareness for research into how to treat this terrible disease.

Outward Bound® is the meaning of the Blue Peter signal flag hoisted by merchant ships as they leave harbour for foreign ports. The combined skills of the entire crew are required to ensure that the ship, in this case a rowboat, makes a safe journey.
While it may be easy enough to learn the technical skills to complete the voyage, it is quite another matter to build a team who will support one another rowing 24 hours everyday for 60 days in the true spirit of Outward Bound®.

As on any Outward Bound® course, the three team members will face many personal challenges as they make their way around Great Britain, learning and developing many of life’s vital skills, such as teamwork, communication and trust – the essentials of life at Outward Bound®.

These young men have chosen to row for Outward Bound® and Leukaemia Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital, to inspire young people throughout Great Britain to achieve their dreams, and enable others to live to see theirs.

“We are honoured to be part of such an exciting challenge. The funds raised will help young people throughout the UK take part in Outward Bound® courses which will assist them in realising their potential.”
